Pat Palmer – Bringing the News Home

On those rare occasions when I do get back to Lamar these days, I stop at the Pit Stop for a Beef and Cheddar Sub. Palmer’s Pit Stop is truly the only place to find that flavor across the country. I’ve been to a lot of sub shops, both franchises and local stops, but the only place I’ve found that particular combination of flavors is right here at home, in our local favorite. I’ve never been able to decide if it’s the bread (which I lean toward this choice) or the company at the Pit Stop. Invariably, I run into Palmer, TJ Sanders, or one of the other many friends who work there when I stop in for a sandwich. Or even more likely, I run into one of my many friends from around the area, stopping in for gas or a sandwich and we get to chat for a moment, catch up on each others lives and remind ourselves why living in a small town is the “best”. Pat Palmer, the owner of The Pit Stop, has become a local celebrity over the years. His participation in all things historical gives him an air of distinction, a Pennsylvania Pioneer read more…

Motel Reviews for Lamar, Colorado

This week’s review is the Blue Spruce Motel, located at the south end of Lamar, catty-wompus from the World Series Ball Parks. Although it would be the most convenient motel for World Series Attendees, is not the most recommended. The first thing you’ll notice when you enter the room is the bad water aroma that assails you from the air conditioner or heater. It may be a residue from prior flooding, or just the left overs of stale days of unuse, either way – rancid is the word. It would seem cold showers are the order of the day. This weekend, we had reason to lease a room for the night. Even waking up early on Saturday morning didn’t improve the cold shower status… Five minutes in and the heat abandons you to icy cold showers. Not a big deal if you don’t mind the shivers first thing in the morning, or you take really fast showers. Hard Surface Bedding isn’t HARD to be around if you need a FIRM solution. Rack one up for rock hard surfaces, these beds provide maximum support for your bad back issues, guaranteed you’ll have a rigid surface on which to press your pants. read more…

Rivers of Wind – Arkansas Valley Clangings

Last night I picked up a book off my headboard by Gary Penley. It’s been hanging out there for a while. I’d lent it to a friend, and when it was returned, I laid it on the headboard. The title of the book is “Rivers of Wind” which always reminds me of the power of wind across the prairie. The wind here is ever changing. Clouds generally arrive on the western horizon, a benefit of living east of the Rocky Mountains, and drift across the land in a predictable fashion. Wind, however, comes from every which direction and is ever changing. In the book, Gary speaks of his grandfather, George Blizzard and a fight he had with Hank Stoner, a man known around these parts as a bully in the early 1900′s. George Blizzard wasn’t necessarily a fighting man, but he stood for something of quality and value and didn’t mind taking a blow or two for his cause. He had purpose in life and he pursued that purpose actively. When bullies like Hank Stoner attempt get in the way of a man like Blizzard, they tend to fall. Once again, the rivers of wind along the Arkansas Valley are read more…
