Hasty Fire
Roads closed around Lamar, Saturday, April 9th as fires scorched much of the prairie on all sides of Lamar. These smoke curls are seen near Hasty as fire wades down the river bottom, burning away tamarack, weeds and undergrowth. Farmers around the area pulled in with tractors and plows or one ways to turn the vast prairie breaking out a fire belt and removing some opportunity for flames to suck away at the drought blistered land. More fires will come. This will not be the end of flames in southeastern Colorado for this year. When fires start before spring has shifted into action, we can most certainly be sure that they will keep coming. Land this dry will burn. The story isn’t over. Along the Back Roads of Prowers County and Bent County, these fires burn out of control. Fire fighters, families and friends who keep vigilant watch over the land, understand the vast exposure to sun, drying winds and heat lightning that can start a fire in a split second. After the Full Moon – John Martin Reservoir
Life in southeastern Colorado has a few perks… Among them, John Martin Reservoir. Growing up, the dam ran the gauntlet from a source of fear, to a source of pleasure. I remember Dad teetering off the edge of the rock face on the pier reaching for his straw hat that had blown into the water as we watched the sailboat races followed by rushing through blinding torrents of rain to escape the flood. Life in the valley below the dam brought many emotional highs and lows over the years. Knowing that my uncles and several other relatives worked on this project in the 1930′s just makes the views of the dam and from the dam that much more special. When I found the photos, including the one above on Danielle Simone’s John Martin Reservoir Blog today, I had to share the photos, and the memories. I know many of us grew up boating, swimming and fishing the Dam. And, who could forget campfires around Hasty Lake, or the many summer events and school trips to the Dam. Anybody else ever watch fireworks from the Dam. Springfield, Eads, Las Animas, La Junta, Lamar and Holly are all visible from the read more…

Teague Bohlen Visits Lamar, Colorado
Teague Bohlen Speaks at Lamar Public Library by: Danielle Simone Teague Bohlen, author of The Pull of the Earth, spoke at Lamar Public Library Wednesday, October 26th. His first presentation from 10 to 2 PM dealt with writing techniques, similar to what he teaches his students at the University of Colorado, Denver campus as Assistant Professor of Creative Writing. During his evening visit, he read the first chapter from his book and answered questions. One of his topics included a general method for putting together a book. ? -Outline, chronologically ? -List a chapter breakdown ? -Create detailed character profiles of about 3 to 5 pages including primary and secondary characters ? -Create short scenes as they come to you without regard for the narrative order His audience participated in several writing exercises including practice with defining characters, putting them in place and dealing with conflict. Mr. Bohlen also had the audience write a family story and then trade it to the person in the next seat. This exercise brought out the difficulty a writer can experience with characterization when he or she is emotionally connected to the characters. Mr. Bohlen’s book, The Pull of the Earth, won the Colorado read more…
