Wages, Pay Scales and Other Compensation Issues
Having tea with the Mayor (who recently voted a 100% pay raise for the NEXT mayor) a few days ago, we discussed compensation for city and county employees. The primary discussion was about the mayor and city council pay hike that doubles their expected income for the next council coming in after the November Elections. Trust me, if they’re doing it for the money, they’re desperate – somebody take up a donation, they’re gonna starve to death!

Urban Redevelopment, Lamar?
I’m so not convinced. While I’m believing that Urban Redevelopment done the right way, could be a boost to the economy and to our community, there’s another spectrum of this issue that keeps me wondering why it’s being sold in such a high pressure manner. When Ann responded to the County Commissioners in anger that they would NEVER get this SWEET cash back package again, and they were losing money by not jumping on the bandwagon, it was her tone and her attitude more than her words that said, “something behind the scenes isn’t quite kosher.” Mind you, I could buy into the sales pitch and fall for the whole 9 yards too, but the reality is, there are some BIG changes that need to be made before it’s a viable option for the citizens of Lamar. Let’s start with the Wednesday night meeting: Ron Stock said, “If the imminent domain issue is so big, we can take it out. We can just simply remove it from the package, since it is so frightening to everyone in town.”

Was Hickenlooper Burning Rubber?
To get out of town, after interviews with the County Commissioners from the Bent County area who provided letters with reasons NOT to close the historically resistant Fort Lyon – Prison? For more years than Colorado has been a state, Fort Lyon has provided jobs in the area. First military jobs as the site was originally a military fort, named for Henry Wise, governor of Virginia, in 1860.
