Madonna of the Santa Fe Trail

The Madonna of the Trail brings thoughts of great women from an era long gone past, but those women exist today in the hearts of many. As a daughter of the prairie, I often have opportunity to revisit the prairie homesteads of my grand parents and great grandparents west of Two Buttes, Colorado. Prowers County Museum offers a great selection of memorabilia and artifacts from a time when women struggled to maintain lives for their families. From simple homesteads with limited conveniences, these women raised children who excelled in life. Today’s professionals, executives, and leaders came from simple beginnings somewhere. As baby boomers exit the professional scenes, retiring in droves, their humble beginnings become even more important. Honoring women of the prairie offers an opportunity to share the history of these women, the strength of a nation, with our own children. Pioneering their way along the Santa Fe Trail, the Madonna of the Trail celebrates the accomplishment of the women who tamed the west, one child at a time. Visit Kids & History for more information.

Lamar Boy Scouts at Yellowstone National Park

Boy Scout Troop 218 just returned from an extended camp at Buffalo Bill Camp in Wyoming, including a run to Yellowstone National Park. Troup leaders, Paul Westhoff, Carl Bender, David Parker, and Rick Francis took two vans and sixteen boy scouts. The first night the scouts camped at an RV Park near Casper Wyoming with a Boy Scout supporter who invited the troop to park there for a night. After a quick camp set up, scouts enjoyed their first night of rest amid the stars, followed by a Non-Denominational Church Service on Sunday Morning. In Shoshone, Wyoming the scouts stopped for bathroom breaks and folks shared their views of the landscape driving through Wyoming. Until Shoshone the boys slept much of the way, but afterward, they stayed awake to enjoy the views of red rocks, twisting mountain roads, a reservoir and tunnels where trains disappeared on one side of the mountain to reveal themselves on the other side. The boy scouts drove through a long tunnel and enjoyed the prospects of escavating and drilling to create highways and roads. Leader, Paul Westhoff, an employee of Colorado Department of Transportation, shared some of the concepts required to create and build vast read more…

BJ’s Burger & Beverage Review

After speaking with the owner of BJ’s Burger and Beverage, Fred Realy, I have to wonder why there’s not a sit down, formal restaurant by the same owner. However, give Fred his due… If he were running two of the same kind of place, would they both be smash-hit delicious, like BJ’s? Original owner of BJ’s, Bob Johnson, passed away a few years back after many years of operating the popular family food hang out. Long time employee Fred Realy became the new owner of the business, and the go-to man when you want changes. Originally made famous at Reid’s Drive Inn in Lamar and LaJunta,  the Zip Burger is known from coast to coast. Family members and former residents come from miles away to get the famous SECRET seasoned ground beef burger, layered with onion, and dill pickle on a toasted bun. Now available on the Dollar Menu, the Zip Burger can be served with a delicious array of accompaniments. Who can resist friend battered mushrooms, curly fries, home style fries, or the masterfully created onion rings. If those don’t appeal to you, try Poppers: deliciously roasted jalepeno peppers stuffed with cheese, rolled in a crumb topping and fried crisply read more…
